Corvette 'evaluating' prototype plans

Corvette Racing programme manager Doug Fehan has revealed that no decision has yet been taken over whether or not the Corvette GT1 engine will be made available for use in prototype race machinery.

Corvette announced yesterday [Tuesday] that its focus for the future would be on developing the C6.R for use in the new look GT class that will come into play in 2010 – with the Corvette Racing team chasing another GT1 win at Le Mans next year before taking on the challenge of a limited GT2 programme though the remainder of 2009 in preparation for the 2010 campaign.

However, in amongst the speculation around Corvette's future plans, was suggestion that it could follow the route set by arch rivals Aston Martin Racing by providing an engine to teams to use in prototypes. The engine from the DBR9 has already shown itself to be a strong performer in the Charouz Racing Systems Lola Coupe, with the car running strongly in the Le Mans Series and at Le Mans this year in its first season of competition.

Fehan admitted that no decision has been taken on whether Corvette would look to follow a similar route in future, but said that it was something that was still being evaluated with enquiries having been made as to whether it would be something Corvette could be interested in.

"As we have said all along, we continue to evaluate every road racing motorsports opportunity that exists," he said. "To date no decision has been made either way on that.

"The only thing we can confirm is that people have come to us inquiring as to whether or not we have an interest in that. That's something that we're still evaluating."
