Lowe’s Fernandez goes out in style

The Lowe's Fernandez Racing team ensured it went out on a high at Laguna Seca with a second place finish in the final round of the American Le Mans Series.

The LMP2 title winners have been racing under a cloud in the latter stages of the season after revealing that it didn't have sufficient funding to continue into the 2010 season, and with no deals having been struck since, the Acura team is now set to close its doors.

Team boss Adrian Fernandez and team-mate Luis Dias enjoyed arguably their strongest run of the season in the final round of the year to take second place overall behind the de Ferran Motorsport LMP1 car and Fernandez was quick to praise his team – which was originally set up to compete in open-wheel racing – for its hard work through the years.

“I have to thank Luis for being a great team-mate, and this team,” he said. “They are just tremendous. I am very proud of them. They gave me the nine best years of my career. We won in every single series we competed. We had a fantastic sponsor in Lowe's and the support of Acura and Michelin. It has just been a great ride. I also have to thank my family for supporting me and giving me their support to come here every weekend.”

Team co-owner Tom Anderson admitted it was the perfect way for the team to bow out.

“It was strategy all the way for us that put us close to an overall win and a great win in the P2 category,” he said. “A special thanks to everyone at Lowe's, Acura and Michelin and the fans that supported all our great sponsors.

“It is the kind of race that we will remember for a long time and it is unfortunate that it is the last one for the Lowe's Fernandez team. You are only as good as your last race and we can go out as winners.”
