Sunoco, Barwell to work on fuel compatibility issue

Avon Tyres British GT Championship fuel supplier Sunoco says it will work with the Barwell Motorsport team to resolve the issues suffered by the Aston Martin team at Oulton Park.

The team elected to run the visiting Belgian GT DBRS9 of Eddy Renard and Vincent Vosse on standard-spec pump fuel for the second race of the weekend to collect engine data, after a 'fuel compatibility' issue resulted in both of its GT3 cars ECU's shutting down during the season opener.

A change in engine mapping on the Beechdean Motorsport-entered car of Andrew Howard and Jamie Smuth seemed to help with the issue during the second race, with the #07 car continuing to run on the championship-spec fuel to score championship points.

Following the race weekend, Sunoco will now work with the team to try and resolve the problem ahead of the second rounds of the season, currently due to take place at Donington Park pending the circuit's upcoming safety inspections.

“The fuel meets FIA specification and meets all the standards for European pump fuel,” a Sunoco spokesman said. “It seems to only be the Aston Martin that has had a problem and it is strange that the ECU on the Aston didn't adapt to the fuel like the other cars did.

“We will be working with the team and we are pleased that a rough remap of the engine at the circuit just before the second race allowed the Beechdean car to run the race distance.

“Now it will be a case of putting the engine on the dyno to do some tests to ensure that all the relevant boxes are ticked and that the Aston gets the full benefit of the Sunoco race fuel.”
