Garofall strengthens Rolex Driver Challenge lead

Rob Garofall proved ice-cool in a damp, dry and wet three-hour SPEED Series race at Brands Hatch to strengthen his lead in the race to secure a drive in the 2010 Rolex 24 at Daytona.

The SPEED sports prototype series visited Brands Hatch GP circuit for their third 2009 race meeting and the 18 car strong field had to face very tricky conditions as the weather changed from dry to wet several times during an amazingly exciting 3-hour endurance race.

Garofall qualified 1.074 seconds off pole at the wheel of his Juno SSE-CN2009 and took over the car from team-mate Chris Bialan in fourth place and climbed through to the lead of the race before a late rain shower threatened his chances – with the car running on slick tyres and rivals behind having already gambled on wets.

However, when another car went off the track, the decision was taken to red flag the race, giving Garofall a win which strengthens his overall lead in the Rolex 24 Daytona Driver Challenge presented by Sunoco.

The result means his average Driver Challenge points now stand at 91.67, putting him well ahead of Radical Race Derek Johnston on 69.38.

British GT front-runner Allan Simonsen sits third on 66.36, with the highest placed British F3 racer being championship leader Daniel Ricciardo in fifth with 62.14.

British F3 and British GT are in action next weekend at Silverstone with the SPEED Series six-hour event at Snetterton the following week.

The Radical racers don't hit the track again until mid-September at Silverstone.
