Diversity bodes well for British GT4

Series promoters SRO have expressed confidence that the GT4 class of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship will see an increase in numbers for the 2010 season.

The second tier of the series has struggled to attract entries since being added to the grid last season, with the 2009 campaign featuring only a handful of cars and the Ginetta G50 having been the main GT4 machine to run in the series over the last two seasons.

Overseas, things have been vastly different, with the Ginetta, the Porsche 997, the Aston Martin Vantage, the BMW M3 and the Corvette C6 winning races in Holland, while the GT4 European Cup has seen victories for Ginetta, BMW, Porsche and Aston Martin.

With that in mind, SRO marketing manager Alistair Spence said he was hopeful that the GT4 field would increase on British soil next season, with an invitation to runners from the Dutch and European series' set to boost the field at Brands Hatch next month.

"It would be great to see some of the top European teams come over here and demonstrate what GT4 is really all about," he said. "It is clear that the GT4 regulations have been well formulated and that no one marque has an unfair advantage.

"Hopefully teams looking to contest British GT next season will take note of these results [in the Dutch and European series] and they will broaden their perceptions.

"SRO is fully committed to GT4 and everyone here believes that a strong GT4 category is vital to the continuing success of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship."
