Andrews takes charge at Snetterton

Simon Andrews continued to stamp his mark on proceedings during the opening day of action for the fifth round of the ViSK.com British Superbike Championship after topping second free practice.

Proving his pace during the opening session was no fluke, the MSS Colchester Kawasaki rider was in even more impressive as he led the way for the majority of the session with a time just under what he managed earlier in the day.

Posting a best of 1min 05.888secs, Andrews was able to resist a late charge by Leon Camier, who gradually stalked his way into contention after a slow start, the championship leader emerging just two thousandths of a second adrift.

Prior to Camier's appearance, Hydrex Honda's Stuart Easton and Karl Harris had been making it a three-way tussle for the top spot in the early stages, although they had to settle for third and fourth eventually, Harris ahead of his team-mate.

In a typically close session indicative of Snetterton's short, but high-speed, layout, just half a second separated Andrews down to Chris Walker in 11th position.

It means HM Plant Honda remain well in contention in fifth and sixth, Josh Brookes leading Glen Richards, while Julien Da Costa was able to underline the pace of the Kawasaki ZX-10R in an encouraging seventh.

Michael Rutter and Ian Lowry flew the Suzuki flag in eighth and ninth, but James Ellison had to make do with tenth having fallen away from an early threat at the top of the leaderboard.

In the Cup category, Gary Mason maintained his run of having topped each dry session this season in 12th position.

Third free practice and Superpole follow tomorrow.
