Andrews recovering after Oulton crash

Simon Andrews' remarkable 2009 British Superbike season came to a bruising climax at Oulton Park after a first lap accident left him briefly unconscious.

In a season that has seen him turn Kawasaki into a competitive package at BSB level, Andrews was in the hunt to finish the season fourth overall heading into the final race, but a spectacular crash at Cascades on the opening lap would rule him out of contention.

Knocked out in the accident, Andrews nonetheless gained consciousness again at the circuit before being taken to local hospital.

“I feel like death today [Monday] after my crash at Cascades. It was a big one and my body is telling me all about it today.”

Despite the accident, Andrews still finishes the season in sixth position overall, just half a point up on his MSS Colchester team-mate Julien Da Costa, who very nearly overhauled his team-mate with a run to sixth in the final race of the season.

“That what a proper roller coaster of a weekend,” said team manager Nick Morgan. “Firstly, can I say that I'm glad Simon is OK after his monumental crash in race two. Shame I can't say the same about the bike.

“The weekend promised so much and delivered so little and to be honest it feels like I'm wiping a bit of egg off my face. Julien rode hard all weekend and if it wasn't for his rubbish qualifying I think we'd have seen him overtake Simon in the championship.

“Simon? He got a stone through his radiator in race 2 and landed himself in hospital in the final race but in the race on Saturday his performance promised lots. Sadly it wasn't to be.”
