Reigning Grand-Am Rolex Series Champions Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty got their title defence back on track with a victory in the latest round of the championship at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
The GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing pairing have only visited the podium once so far this year, but made the most of the difficult conditions to score their first win since last August at the Infineon Raceway.
Moving the duo up to third in the overall standings, team owner Bob Stallings was relieved to make the belated return to the top of the rostrum.
"This win is a lot later than I expected it to be by a long shot," he said. "Honestly, I have kind of forgotten how it feels to be a winner because we haven't won since Sonoma last year.
“I am really happy for our team because winning is a routine that you get into clearly as evidenced by last year, and I want this team to get back into a rhythm. There were eight races left and I said I want to win all eight of them and now we have one down and seven to go."
With rain causing many to struggle, the Pontiac Riley dropped as low as 23rd at one point following a spin, but a strong strategy propelled them back up the order to eventually take the win.
"It was a pretty wild race for sure," Gurney said. "I didn't envy being in the car there at the beginning, it looked really difficult and I thought they might even red flag it or we would go yellow all day.
“When Jon went to the back it actually ended up working out for us because we ended up pitting at an earlier point than we probably would have. We got the driver change done and that made us good to the end."
