David Donohue has emulated his father Mark in securing victory in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Some 40 years after his father's win, Donohue held off the challenge of Juan Pablo Montoya in the closing laps to secure victory for the Brumos Racing crew alongside Darren Law, Buddy Rice and Antonio Garcia.

The final hours of the race saw the top four running together, with Montoya doing all he could to fend off the challenge of the Brumos cars behind – despite the Porsche-powered Rileys having the edge on straight-line speed.

The final pit-stops saw the #01 crew retain the lead but only after Montoya managed to slightly get the jump on the #58 car, with Donohue replacing Antonio Garcia at the wheel.

Aiming to emulate his father in winning the race, Donohue eventually made the pressure pay as he managed to get ahead coming over the start-finish line and set about pulling out a lead over the former F1 racer behind.

Traffic didn't allow Donohue to get the lead he wanted while right behind Montoya, Joao Barbosa in the #59 was ensuring that the Colombian couldn't focus too much on trying to get past the leader. Max Angelelli meanwhile wasn't far behind in the #10 SunTrust car and was ready to take advantage of any delays ahead.

In traffic, Montoya would close onto the rear of the Porsche only for Donohue to then eek out the smallest of leads once back on the banking – ensuring Montoya wasn't able to get the tow he needed to try and make a move for the lead.

Into the final ten minutes, Donohue led by less than half a second but a gaggle of GT cars were just ahead as the leaders headed onto the banking. The first two both managed to clear a pair of GT Porsches into the chicane but Barbosa failed to make it through and dropped back. Next up was the Spirit of Daytona car, but Scott Russell dropped low on the banking through the final turn and allowed the leaders through.

Five minutes remaining and the top two were able to clear two more GT cars but started lap 733 just four-tenths apart – with Barbosa and Angelelli out of the equation.

Montoya refused to be beaten and would close in on the infield, but Donohue moved away again on the banking heading into the final lap.

With radio calls suggesting all wasn't well with the Brumos car, Donohue cleared a GT Porsche into the chicane but Montoya failed and it allowed the #58 car to open up the advantage he needed to secure an emotional win for the team, with Ganassi's winning run coming to an end.

Barbosa took third from Angelelli with the top four all on the same lap, while Scott Dixon and Romain Dumas rounded out the top six for Ganassi and Penske.

The GT win went to the #67 TRG Porsche as RJ Valentine took the flag ahead of the #66 in the hands of Spencer Pumpelly.
