Rob Bell completed his Le Mans Series campaign in fine style in Brazil as he completed the season with a 100 per cent record of finishing on the podium to secure the GT2 title.
Having competed for the Virgo Motorsport team for most of the season, Bell switched to the JMB Racing team for the final round of the campaign at Interlagos, partnering Ben Aucott and Philipp Peter in a Ferrari 430 similar to that he drove for Virgo alongside Allan Simonsen – who also switched teams for the final race to the James Watt Automotive Porsche.
Running over 1000 miles, the Mil Milhas was the longest event of the season, with GT2 cars comprising the majority of the field. Bell qualified the car, turning second fastest lap in the GT2 car and eleventh quickest time overall – putting the trio in a good position for the race.
Peter took the start and although he dropped a couple of places in the opening hour, the Ferrari fought back to third place as the race progressed.
Despite trying to close on one of the sister JMB cars in the fight for second, the trio had to settle for a creditable third – ensuring that Bell finished each of the six LMS races inside the top three.
“It was quite a weekend for me in Brazil,” he said. “When Allan didn't join me in the car at Silverstone it was a shame for him, but I thought I had wrapped up that title. I arrived in Brazil and found myself not actually having clinched it outright. We had a joke about it before we raced, but in the end I could rest easy about halfway through! A podium from every race this year has given me a few more trophies to clean, but that's very welcome. It's also shown how important it is to be consistent, that's how I ended up with the driver's title.
“I'm pleased to have got fastest lap and helping to bring JMB one of their two podiums in Brazil this weekend - I hope it made the long trip to South America worthwhile for the team. I thoroughly enjoyed driving this track and experiencing the Brazilian F1 venue – another new circuit to add to my list!”
