Shaun Simpson, second in last Sunday's MX2 Grand Prix of Benelux, has undergone surgery after fracturing his left leg during a training accident at the Ersel practice facility in Holland on Wednesday.

The Scottish rider broke his left leg after he landed hard in a jumping section and the throttle on his bike got stuck.

As a result of this incident Simpson went off the track, through the fence and hit a tree, resulting in serious injuries and major damage to the bike.

"I want to underline that this was extremely bad luck but no riding error by Shaun," said Pit Beirer, Offroad Sports Director.

Simpson was initially admitted to the nearby Veldhofen hospital in order to access and stabilise his condition.

Under the co-ordination of KTM team manager Stefan Everts, Shaun was then transferred by ambulance to a hospital in Eeklo, Belgium late last night to undergo treatment by Doctor Ghyjselings.

Ghyjselings is a specialist in sports injuries and has successfully treated the likes of Everts and other top riders.

During the very early hours of Thursday morning Simpson underwent a surgical procedure to address the injuries to his lower left leg. These injuries included a fracture of the tibia approximately 75mm above the ankle joint and three separate factures to his Fibula.

The operation was carried out using an epidural injection, which allowed the factory Red Bull KTM rider to be awake throughout the treatment.

Simpson will under go a scan later today to confirm the positive initial post-operative assessment and Doctor Ghyjselings will then be better placed to provide details of the time scales involved in his rehabilitation process.
