DAKAR: Day 2 - Coma retains lead despite woe |
Marc Coma continues to lead the 2009 Dakar Rally by a comfortable margin, despite seeing his the huge lead acquired after day one cut by a mechanical fault.
Coma had established a 22mins lead on the opposition following the first stage, only to see that reduced to 13mins when he suffered a radiator problem. Up to that point, the KTM rider had been comfortably quickest through the check points.
The stage win instead belonged to KTM counterpart Frans Verhoeven, who in turn jumps up to second place overall to lead the challenge to Coma. Yamaha's David Fretigne moves up to third after posting the third best time, albeit only after Jonah Street was dropped from third to fifth when he suffered a six minute penalty.
Elsewhere, Cyril Despres recovered some of the ground he lost on day one with the second quickest stage time, but while the Frenchman leaps up to 12th position, he is still half an hour off the leaders.
