Smith column: Roll on Donington Park!

In his latest column for Crash.net, Bradley Smith looks back on the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring before turning his attentions to his home race at Donington Park...

Three crashes in one day is not the ideal preparation for my home grand prix at Donington Park on Sunday, but it was just one of those days that you have to put behind you.

Race day in Germany just turned into whole combination of things going against me and when I crashed for the third time I knew it was time to get packed up and get home to Oxford.

I always try to take positives out of any situation and although it was not so easy this time, I was not injured in any of the crashes. I know why I crashed and on Friday and I'll be back on the bike for the first practice session for the British Grand Prix.

I'd qualified in second place on Saturday afternoon, but Sunday did not start well when I fell in the warm-up. I think the track was a bit edgy because of all the rain that had fallen and the bike slid away on a corner where I'd been going through all weekend with no problems whatsoever.

For the race we chose a slighter harder front tyre and I realised our mistake when I ran wide leading into the first corner. I gathered my wits but at the top of the hill I got caught by a gust of wind and the front end of the bike just folded away. When I got the grip back I was already on the wet grass and down I went. While I was sliding I was already sorting out what to do and all that Motocross training helped because I managed to whip in the clutch and keep the engine running. I jumped back on in last place to still have a good chance of some World Championship points.

For a couple of laps I just checked that everything was OK before deciding it was time to get down to some serious lap time - but it was not to be! I came up behind wild card entry Eeki Kuparinen coming into turns five and six. I was lapping around four seconds a lap quicker than him and went up the inside of him. He went wider but pulled back in and we met in the middle of the track. I got a good whack in the back and crashed again. He should have realised I was there but he is very inexperienced at this level and I also will take some of the blame by not realising how inexperienced he was.

I think I could have finished in the top twelve, but I can't change the situation. I will now concentrate all my efforts on the British Grand Prix on Sunday, which is my most important race of the year. I love the track and everybody from family and friends will be there making it such a special weekend.

It's a very busy time on and off the track and it's important to keep focused on the racing. I've had a great following of fans throughout the world this year and coming home to meet them all is very special. I love meeting them all and really appreciate how they support me. Some people struggle with all the work away from the track, but I still love it and watching them have so much fun.
