Smith column: Back to reality

In his latest column for Crash.net, Bradley Smith looks back on a busy summer break and then ahead to this weekend's Czech Republic Grand Prix at Brno...

It's time to step back into reality after two weeks away from the World Championship. I've had a great two weekends but now every part of my brain and body is focused on one thing – start winning grand prix races again beginning at Brno in the Czech Republic this weekend.

I had no time to reflect on the Donington disappointment because of the preparation for the battle with Jenson Button in the London Triathlon the Sunday after the British Grand Prix. It turned out to be a brilliant event and although I didn't manage to beat Jenson I was really chuffed with my time. I was out of bed at 4.50 on that Sunday morning and thriving on pure adrenalin.

I'd never completed a 1500m open water swim before or a 10km race and we reckoned a time of around two hours 20 minutes was around my limit. I was over the moon when I checked my watch as I crossed the line in two hours 13 minutes. The racer in me meant I was disappointed not to beat Jenson but both our times were outstanding.

It was great spending time with Jenson after we'd met at Silverstone. I got an insight into his mind set and that winning mentality. Also I watched on just how he conducted himself with everybody.

The next weekend it was back to my roots and the British Superbike meeting at Brands Hatch. I'm British through and through and really enjoyed the racing and especially the 125 race with my KRP/Bradley Racing Team competing. The guys put on a really good show and are still first and second in the Championship. The race was shown live on the television and there was a big crowd and plenty of interest.

I helped with the Eurosport Commentary of the race which was brilliant fun working with Jack Burnicle and Jamie Whitham. Helping and learning from them just adds pieces to my personal jigsaw puzzle and hopefully boosts the news and publicity of our sport.

After the Brands meeting I went to the Porsche Human Performance Centre at Silverstone for my regular fitness check. The guys there are brilliant and into every aspect of fitness and strength. I showed a big improvement since my last test two months ago which they put down to my training regime. We have seven more grands prix including long flights to America, Australia and Malaysia which take a toll on your fitness and so it's vital to be fit and strong.

I'm not down after crashing out of the those last two races but two non points scoring finishes is just not good enough. I need to claw back eights points a race to catch Julian at the front and I'm concentrating everything into starting that process on Sunday. Brno is a very technical track and so we need to work hard together on the set-up of the bike.

For the last two weeks, in between jumping into London Docks at 7.30 in the morning and becoming a television commentator, I've been analysing just what went wrong in the Sachsenring and Donington. I reckon it's a case of the pace is there but the grip is not. Please Please don't rain on Sunday!

Bradley
