It needs to be done , the sport needs to return to the skill of the rider and not the skills of the electronics department to master the machine . Maybe a standard ecu is not the answer , but a ban on all electronic rider aids would be (traction control , anti-wheely ect ).Mr Ezpeleta is right to say this , otherwise we are going to end up with a show like F1 or no show in there case . MOTOGP » Control electronics?

MotoGP may have narrowly avoided the introduction of a control tyre rule for 2008, but Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta has revealed that 'control electronics' could be on the horizon.

We were already discussing it on the other thread, weren't we? Crash is a bit slow on picking it up ;-)

The idea behind it is not bad (a bit like a control GPS on the Dakar rally) but I doubt it is feasible,
the ECU's are designed specifically for the characteristics of the bikes.
It will give massive discussion in the paddock (again), cannot be implemented this winter
and the 2009 season may be another screwup if they do it then.
You can opt to ban electronics or certain parts of it (no launch control, antiwheelie systems) but that will open up the safety discussion again...
My suggestion: make it 500cc again (fourstrokes) and ban electronics. Riders can get used to that.

I love the thought of havin the 500 era back but thats not likely, i think its an excellent idea to limit to a standard ECU, then the newbies wouldnt come straight up from 250 and run at the front of the pack, they'd have to work hard and learn the bikes properly to be fast, not just rip the throttle open. This would bring the racing back down to the riders and not so much the influence of the bikes, if it carrys on as it is there aint guna be any need for riders in a few years

Has this idea been created by Rossie whinging again because the young riders keep beating him, first he wants the winners tyres now he wants to control their bikes. I find the present format great to watch and its better to see riders stay on rather than keep falling off.

With F1 running standard ECU's for the first time next year MotoGP can just sit back, see what happens, and then make a decision (depending on how sucesful it is in F1) for 2009.

If it can be introduced in F1 then there's no reason why it can't happen in MotoGP... and MotoGP could just copy the methods of regulation/checking that F1 will use.

Trouble is, unless WSBK does something similar, then WSBK will be able to boast that it has more powerful engines AND more complex electronics in its championship...

The problem with 500cc four strokes is that the superbikes will be quicker. Maybe with laughing gas added it would be better (might help a few riders also) ;).

Would the ECU control control the sparks and the fuel (surely each system is taylored to each bike/rider), or would it be an independant system for TC and Launch/wheelie control (whats wrong the clutch?).

I suppose the best thing about this subject is that Mr Ezpeleta now realises somthing is wrong with motogp. After all, what will be next CGI and we can decide which rider we want to win and what he can look like (I want to be Rossi with his lovely hair ;))

MOTOGP is about PROTOTYPES... I guess they should not use a standard ECU, but i think that Electronic controls should be only applied to gain engine performance,, not to make the bike "rideable" by a monkey...
