Another evil idea from HRC, they can't make a decent 2 stroke and now try to shove this "prototipe" idea in our throats. I hate Hondas and i honestly hate HRC, 250 s are ideal for the porpouse, HRC sucks.

ray your right. honda defiantly have something to do with it. the only reason they are running a couple of 250's, that they are no longer developing, is to be able to have a say in what happens next.

i find it amazing that people confuse carbon emmisions from an engine i e all petrol engines with 2 stroke other emmisions.the argument about a 250 engines emmisions being 2 strokes is ludicrous when you consider the teams flying all over the world all year to race in fuel guzzling aircraft with filthy emmisions.the argument is an insult to intelligence

I think it would be good if they changed the 2 stroke 250cc to 4 stroke 400-500cc, not 600cc. And if they were changing the 2 stroke 125cc class, they should have it as 4stroke 250-300cc.

Also, I think they should scrap the electronics and traction control moto gp and the other classes if their converted to 4 strokes. It makes it so much more interesting without all of the electronics. I mean, 990cc machines when they started of did'nt have any electronics (i think) and they were fun to watch! It came in when the 800cc was brought last year, and in my honest opinion, thats the only reason stoner won it last year.

2 stroke dirt bikes are much cheaper to rebuild than comparable 4 strokes, ask your local Yamaha dealer about the cost for repairs after dropping a valve or breaking a timing chain on your YZF450 if you don't believe me.

Approx 3 times the cost for a topend rebuild compared to my old YZ490 stroker !

cheers

hahhhhhh, how clueless all of to think that 4T will lessen maintenance coz it will need fewer rebuild..

You forgot one big manta in racing. "The perfect race car/bike is designed to cross the finish line first and then fall to pieces." therefore racing engines are designed to last only for a race, and must be rebuilt every each race. This is GP racing, components (crankshaft, con rods, etc) are built as light as possible, to produce as much power as possible. power always comes first and reliability always takes a back seat. max power, just enough reliability to last the race. trying to make it too reliable will mean letting your opponent cross the line first.

costly? yes...

F1 saw this, hence the move to make the engine last a few race, and even the move to make the gearbox last 2 races.

They made it as an attempt to cut cost.

However, Motogp had no such rules and still engines are built to last 1 race.

bottomline, your argument how 4 strokes will cut cost due to less rebuild doesnt really hold.

so.. next argument please?

Anyway,

this production engine thing is moot. They would all replace the contents to make more power, the crankshaft, pistons, cams, con rods, etc... They would port everything and make all things lighter. in the end, what would remain is the case. Superbikes says they are racing production based bikes, but their engines have only the slightest similarity to the engines of the CBRs, ZX's R1s and 1098s.
