Jeff Gordon is always one of the popular stars of NASCAR, but his lower position in the Crash.net poll this year compared with 2011 acknowledges the fact that this wasn't exactly a vintage season for the four-time champion. Right up to the end, it seemed like he would even miss out on the Chase altogether until a final effort at Richmond saw him pip Kyle Busch for a place at the last moment.
Unfortunately Gordon didn't have the best of starts to the Chase, and it wasn't really his fault when a stuck throttle put him into the wall at Chicago; however, his actions in the penultimate race which saw him wreck Clint Bowyer in a brazen bit of retaliation didn't exactly do him much credit.
Fortunately Gordon finished the season on a high with a terrific win at Homestead-Miami, which shows there is still plenty of life left in the old dog yet.
