Crash.Net NASCAR News Daytona 500 - Cup results 24 February 2013
A relatively restrained Daytona 500 saw Jimmie Johnson lay down an early marker in the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship with victory in the season-opener, the event dubbed "The Great American Race."
Johnson timed his run to the front to perfection, taking over from Brad Keselowski just before the final caution of the afternoon. After the restart, Johnson easily controlled the six-lap shootout to the line ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Last year's event winner Matt Kenseth led the most laps of the race, but was one of three of the six leading Toyota drivers to suffer technical problems in the final quarter of the event. Also suffering problems were Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton, Juan Montoya and Trevor Bayne who all ended up involved in various accidents during the course of the 200-lap, 500-mile race.
Polesitter Danica Patrick became the first female driver ever to lead laps in the Daytona 500, but got shuffled back in the final scramble for the flag and finished in eighth place.
