Crash.Net NASCAR News Las Vegas - Nationwide results 9 March 2013 Sam Hornish Jr. claimed his second win in 69 NASCAR Nationwide Series races with victory in the Sam's Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, his first being back in November 2011. Hornish led for 114 of the 200 laps of the 1.5-mile oval and now leads the championship standings by 19 points over Justin Allgaier.
Joe Gibbs Racing's Brian Vickers had led the early laps after being handed pole position by the cancellation of qualifying due to Friday's rain showers, but soon Brad Keselowski hunted down the leader and took over on lap 25 through to the first round of pit tops. A two-tyre call then put Trevor Bayne in front for 14 laps until a spin for Joe Nemechek following contact with Mike Wallace on lap 56, but Bayne was subsequently involved in a minor accident with Kyle Larson that put both cars into the wall. Hornish won the battle at the restart ahead of Vickers, Austin Dillon and Kyle Busch to lead for the first time on lap 61, but meanwhile Brad Keselowski ended the day on pit lane suffering from a vibration, damaged splitter and temperature issues.
A debris caution - the sixth yellow of the afternoon - allowed a new round of pit stops with 63 laps to go, although that was rather too early to be entirely comfortable about making it to the end without a further fuel stop. Local boy Busch overcame JGR team mate Vickers at the restart to lead on lap 147, but six laps later Hornish cruised by them both and was back in front. Two subsequent late cautions - including one for Kyle Larson getting pancaked into the wall for a second time, this time after getting collected by Joey Gase in an impact that totally wrecked the #32 - made the fuel situation somewhat moot. Hornish once again saw off the challenge from Busch at the restart and had successfully pulled out a big lead by the time the chequered flag came out; Busch was safely in second leaving Vickers fighting off Bayne and Elliott Sadler for third place.
