Martinez joins elite with double win

Marcos Martinez is hoping to capitalise on his superb start to the World Series by Renault season after landing two victories in the opening round of the season in Spain.

Martinez, who enters his second season with Pons Racing in 2009, made the most of his reverse grid front row start for the first race, managing a good start to lead at the opening corner before resisting the attentions of Bertrand Baguette for his maiden victory at this level.

His second race win, meanwhile, came after an opportunistic strategic decision to delay his compulsory pit stop as long as possible before rain arrived to disrupt proceedings.

With many drivers forced to pit again, Martinez made his one and only stop for wet rubber to come out in a five-strong the leading group, where he proceeded to edge Sten Pentus and Adrian Zaugg to win.

Only the fifth driver to score a double World Series by Renault victory after Robert Kubica, Alx Danielsson, Eric Salignon and Giedo van der Garde, Martinez is keen to maintain that kind of form for the remainder of the season.

"I got off to a good start and I was up with the leaders,” he said. “We'd decided to make a late pit stop, because I was really on the pace. When the rain started, the team asked me to stay out for a while.

“It was a super decision, because it meant we only stopped once. It was difficult to keep on the track … Two races, two wins. It's superb! We'll do our best to hold onto this position.”
