Lancaster leads British 1-2-3 at Le Mans

Jon Lancaster has taken his maiden World Series by Renault pole position after leading a trio of British drivers during Superpole at Le Mans.

Lancaster, competing in only his third World Series event, has been a dominant force at the French circuit thus far this weekend, evoking memories of his dominance at this event two years ago in a Formula Renault 2.0 machine.

In a typically fast moving Superpole session, Lancaster was able to hit the top spot in the closing seconds, resisting the charge of James Walker, the P1 Motorsport driver making it an all-British (and Norfollk based) front row.

Lancaster's performance is particularly notable given it is the first time 2006 champions Comtec have qualified inside the top ten this year, while it is also their first outright pole position since Marco Bonanomi at Spa last season.

Completing the dominance of the British contingent was Oliver Turvey, who lifted himself up to third position for Carlin Motorsport, with Silverstone winner Charles Pic completing the second row, albeit four tenths adrift.

Refusing to be distracted by his rumoured graduation to Formula 1 next weekend, Jaime Alguersuari made it a good session for the Carlin team in his Repsol-backed machine, qualifying ahead of title chaser Bertrand Baguette, the Belgian himself three positions up on ninth place championship leader Marcos Martinez.

Between them, Hungaroring winner Pasquale di Sabatino was an impressive seventh in the sole RC Motorsport car to guarantee himself a front row slot in the reverse grid opening race, It is Marco Barba, though, that will start on pole position for Draco.

Behind Martinez, the increasingly impressive Sten Pentus will start from his first top ten grid slot of the season in tenth, ahead of Miguel Molina and World Series debutant Edoardo Mortara.
