Injured Weel on road to recovery

Paul Weel has been released from Westmead Hospital in Sydney after a week of receiving medical attention following his horrific accident at Bathurst last week.

Weel had already tagged the wall at the McPhillamy Park section during Friday practice when Team Kiwi Racing's Chris Pither slammed into the side of the stranded PWR Racing Holden, writing off the black-and-red machine and leaving its driver to be airlifted to hospital.

Remarkably, Weel's injuries were light - especially in comparison to those suffered by rival Paul Radisich in a one-car accident the following day - but he was kept in hospital for observation after being diagnosed with heavy bruising and at least one cracked rib.

Despite admitting that he still felt 'very sore' a week on from the accident, Weel was finally released from medical care on Thursday [16 October] and was able to head home to the Gold Coast. His condition, however, did not allow for air travel and the V8 regular is being driven home by wife Emma.

"Paul would like to thank the many people who have 'phoned, text and emailed their thoughts and best wishes while he was at Westmead Hospital," a PWR team statement reported.

"He has also asked for a special thanks to the rescue and medical staff at the Bathurst circuit, Dr Carl Li and his crew and the wonderful staff at Westmead ICU."
