V8 looks to exciting future on Gold Coast

Tony Cochrane: The real heroes of this weekend have been our teams and drivers who have put in phenomenal hours at massive extra cost to ensure this event was a success...
Despite having to step up to the plate at almost the death-knock hour with just four days to turn around disastrous ticket sales, V8 Supercars Australia is delighted with the attendance given the difficult circumstances.

The four-day crowd of 205,260 would still easily rank it as one of the biggest sporting event crowds that Queensland, and Australia, has conducted over a weekend.

“The real heroes of this weekend have been our teams, drivers and team owners who have put in phenomenal hours at massive extra cost to ensure this event was a success for everyone concerned,” V8 Supercars Australia executive chairman Tony Cochrane said.

“Their professionalism and great Aussie pride have pulled this off and I'm sure I speak on behalf of all our fans in saying just how proud of our V8 Supercar teams we are.

“I know our teams really burnt the midnight oil last night preparing their cars for the second round of battle today after a huge day on Saturday. The crowd response has also been tremendous and we would like to thank each and every one of them for their ongoing support.”

Mr Cochrane said he had received plenty of feedback from spectators who revelled in what was a far better environment that perhaps in previous years.

“It was interesting to note that being a V8 Supercar only event this year how many more family groups were here and the overall better behaviour of sections of the public,” Mr Cochrane said.

“I've been told by Police that the crowds have showed enormous passion for motorsport and V8 Supercars but been the best behaved in many, many years.”

He added that V8 Supercars Australia would now develop a plan moving forward that would be presented to the Queensland Government early next month.
