Villeneuve targeted for V8 seat

Jacques Villeneuve could line up on the grid for the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship season if ambitious plans from team owner Paul Morris come to fruition.

According to the Herald Sun, the former F1 world champion could become the new team-mate of Russell Ingall in the Supercheap Auto Racing line-up, with team boss Morris saying he felt there was a 'good chance' it could happen.

"This is real. Absolutely. He is pretty keen to do it," Morris told the Australian 'paper. "It would be the full season. Not just one race. If we can make a bit of a buzz about it then I think it can definitely happen.

"We would have to write about $2 million in sponsorship so we could run the car and pay him to drive."

Since leaving Formula One, Villeneuve has attempted to race in a variety of series, including NASCAR, but Morris said he was sure the former Williams F1 man would be a success in V8s.

"Man, how good would it be?” he said. “How long since we've had a Formula One driver in touring cars in Australia. The last one was Alan Jones. And if he drives as good as AJ, he will be all right.

"The next step would be to get him out here to drive the car. He also has some sort of connection with French television, so I'm looking at how we could make that work."

I hope he does do it, because I will laugh every time he fails. I've never rated JV as a driver, he won the champ in '97 because he had the best car. A monkey could have won the championship in that car. He achieved nothing after he won the championship, because his car wasn't good enough to overcome his lack of talent.
