It may have been attempted with a wide range of machinery, from F1 to touring cars, but this weekend will see the first ever showdown between a V8 Supercar and a fighter jet, as Bundaberg Red Racing driver David Reynolds pits his VE Commodore against an L-39 at the Wide Bay Australia International Airshow.

The challenge, to be staged at Bundaberg Airport, was laid down when the rookie team plotted Reynolds journey to the Townsville 400 and decided to stop in at the home of Bundaberg Rum along the way.

“When we found out that the Wide Bay Airshow was on in Bundaberg just a week before the Townsville 400, we started dreaming up the possibility of racing the Bundy Commodore VE against a fighter jet," Reynolds said, “I never thought it would actually happen, but it is, and I can't wait."

Despite the majority of car versus plane duels going the way of the airborne contender, Reynolds remained bullish about reversing the trend.

“Can I beat a fighter jet? All I will say is 'watch out mate'," he said, no doubt a little tongue-in-cheek, "Your fighter jet's got nothing on the Bundy Red Commodore VE - get ready to eat my dust!”

The race will be conducted on a straight three kilometre track on Saturday [4 July], with the L-39 having to elevate to a height of one kilometre before starting its forward progress.
