V8 boss opens 'crisis talks' over SuperGP

V8 Supercar boss Tony Cochrane vows to 'bust a gut' to save the Nikon SuperGP if A1GP fails to appear at Surfers Paradise
V8 Supercar bosses are reported to have opened crisis talks with officials from the Nikon SuperGP and the Queensland government to help save next weekend's event at Surfers Paradise.

As things stand, the chances of the A1GP field lining up for the event appear to be slim, with the cars yet to leave for Australian shores and a number of other issues making it increasingly unlikely that the single-seater series will take its place on the schedule.

While SuperGP general manager Greg Hooton has refused to confirm that A1GP won't appear at the event, insiders now believe that there is 'no chance' of the cars taking to the track, with the Daily Telegraph reporting that talks are underway about a Plan B that will fill the track time that would be left should A1GP withdraw from the meeting.

Amongst the suggestions are to add a third V8 Supercar race onto the weekend schedule or extend the two current 200km races by 100km each. Another possible option would be for either the V8 Utes or V8 Fujitsu Series to run races at Surfers Paradise during the weekend.

"The problem we have is there are only six days to go," V8 Supercar chief Tony Cochrane was quoted by the 'paper. "I will meet with my management team in the morning and see what we can put on to fill the slot. I will bust my guts to help out here because it is a really important event."

Even when the Champ Car World Series, or the IndyCar Series last season, has been part of the SuperGP weekend, the V8 Supercars have remained the big draw for fans and Toll HRT driver Garth Tander insisted the event didn't need open-wheel racing to be a success.

"For years the fans told us they go to Indy for the parties and the V8s," he said. "It will be as good as ever regardless of what happens with the A1GP. The atmosphere will be the same and the V8 championship is heating up so the action will be just as good."
