Sordo heading for best gravel result |
Dani Sordo is on course for his sixth World Rally Championship podium of the season – and his third in a row – after moving up into the top three at the end of the dramatic second day of the Rally Japan.
Benefiting from offs for Citroen team-mate Sebastien Loeb and Jari-Matti Latvala, Sordo moved up from fourth to second over the course of the day, but heads into the final leg with a gap of almost 40secs to make up on leader Mikko Hirvonen.
Nonetheless, the Spaniard makes no mention of going for the victory on the final day, the youngster claiming the difficult conditions are taking its toll on his C4.
“It has been good all afternoon except in SS18 where we lost a lot of time. That was horrible. The ruts are too deep. The car is banging all over the place, the wheels do not touch the ground and it becomes impossible to drive.”
It would be a breakthrough result for Sordo if he was able to hold onto the position as four of his five podiums have occurred on tarmac and he has never finished so high on a gravel surface.
"With so much mud about it certainly wasn't easy. The amount of grip available changed all the time but I managed to find a quick pace that enabled us to set some good times. There's still a day left for me to gain more experience of this type of conditions while at the same time trying to defend second place."
