Mitsubishi's Gabriel Pozzo remains in contention for the FIA Production Car World Rally Championship title following his second place finish on the Rally Ireland at the weekend.
Pozzo had to score at least eight points to keep his title dream alive and he inherited the runners-up spot on the penultimate stage when Armindo Araujo crashed out.
The Argentine driver now trails Toshi Arai, who has already taken in his six nominated events, by 9 points. As such he needs to win the Wales Rally GB in two weeks time to deprive the Japanese driver of his second crown.
"It's been an incredible rally," Pozzo told
mitsubishi-motors.com. "You know I just can't believe the last three days and what we have seen. These roads were amazing.
"It was an asphalt rally, but you know on the first day, there was so much mud around, we would have been better using a gravel tyre.
"Then on the second day, the rain, wow, the rain was incredible. The way the rain changed the level of grip from corner to corner was hard to understand.
"Through all of this, though, the car was right, the car was great and we got the result we needed. This was the rally I was worried about. I hadn't driven on asphalt since 2002, so I didn't really know what to expect.
"But now we go to Wales Rally GB with a chance of the championship - and that's what matters," he summed-up.
