Wilks ends WRC campaign on a high |
Britain's Guy Wilks put in an extremely impressive performance on the inaugural Rally Ireland at the weekend to finish sixth overall and score his first ever points at the 'senior' level.
Wilks, who had done five other WRC events this season, switched from using a privately entered Ford Focus WRC car to a Subaru Impreza for the Sligo-based round and it definitely paid off.
The Englishman ran in the points from early on day 1, moving up to sixth in the final loop on Friday, before maintaining that position all the way to the finish.
All-in-all Wilks managed to set 17 top-ten stage times in total from a possible 20, including a second best effort in the penultimate test, as well as fifth fastest time and five sixth quickest efforts.
"It didn't start out that well, but we got better in the later stages [on leg 1]," he reflected.
"It was still tricky [on day 2]. Right at the start on SS13 we were slowed down where Manfred [Stohl] had gone off in a really tricky place. [After that] we just kept the pace up and kept the concentration going. On Sunday we just went at a comfortable pace," he summed-up.
Wilks now shifts his attentions to Rally GB and whilst he will be in action there, he won't be in a World Rally Car car. Instead he will use a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, as the Welsh event also counts towards the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship, where Guy will be bidding to try and secure the BRC title.
