Henning Solberg endured a trying end to what has been a difficult World Rally Championship season after he crashed out of Wales Rally GB on the final day of the event.

The Stobart VK M-Sport driver went into the final leg battling for fifth position with the Suzuki of P-G Andersson.

Andersson held the place going into the final loop of stages but Solberg's Focus WRC was close behind as the pair entered the penultimate test – the second run through Rheola.

However, part way through the 27.96km stage, Solberg ran wide and hit rocks on the side of the road, damaging the suspension on his car and putting him out of the event.

"Obviously I'm disappointed we didn't finish the event but I had to have a go to try and catch Andersson," Solberg reflected. "We ran slightly wide and over some rocks which damaged the rear suspension so it wasn't really the best way to end off the year.

"This was a difficult event for everyone and we started off slowly here as the conditions were so tricky and finding grip on the frozen gravel was hard. We did find a really good setting with the diff on Saturday and after that we set some good times so I was pleased with that."

Solberg ends the season eighth in the drivers' championship standings.
