Wilson eyes Rally Australia top-five

Britain's Matthew Wilson has set his sights on finishing in the top-five on the Rally Australia this coming weekend, something he has already managed three times this season in his Stobart Ford Focus RS WRC.

Wilson has managed to get into the points in all but two of the events this year and currently lies seventh in the drivers' championship, with 20 points - just five less than 2003 World Rally champion, Petter Solberg and seven less than his team-mate, Henning Solberg.

He will now want to maintain that consistency and increase his points' tally on the tenth round in the 2009 World Rally Championship.

"We want to keep that points run going," Wilson told Crash.net Radio. "This could be one event, from what we have heard about the stages and everything, that suits us and hopefully we can get inside the top five, which would be really good.

"But as it is a new event until you see it for yourself, and see what it is like, and how the weather is and all that sort of stuff, you can't really make too many pre-plans. But I am sure it will be a good one for us."

Rally Australia is back on the WRC schedule this season, having last taken place in 2006, when Wilson was in his debut year at the top level. He finished 26th then, but that will have little bearing, as the event has now shifted to New South Wales.

"I have heard quite a bit [about the new Rally Australia]," Wilson continued. "A little bit about the nature of the stages and how they are. Some of it is meant to be quite quick, I think, and quite technical in other places.

"But until you see it yourself on the recce, you can't really make any real big judgements. I am looking forward to it though."

Asked about his season overall, Wilson added that he has been really happy with what he has managed to achieve.

"I think it has been a massive step forward this year. We have had three fastest times, which is really promising and every event that we have finished we have been inside the points," he explained. "There was potential for points on a few more rallies too.
