IRC: Meeke, Wilks share Scotland stage wins

Guy Wilks is 4.1sec behind recently-crowned IRC champion Kris Meeke after four stages of the Rally of Scotland.

Overnight rain gave way to clear skies this morning but that didn't mean conditions on the stages were any better. Wilks began in the same vein as he left off last night, feeling his way carefully over the first two forest stages.

Driving a Skoda Fabia S2000, he and co-driver Phil Pugh were 3sec slower than Meeke over the first stage, the 17.3Km Craigvinean, test but immediately redressed the balance on the following, the 11.50Km Blackgraig.

Commenting after the first two stages, Wilks said: “I was very careful at the end of the first stage, as the conditions were very slippery; it was only the first stage and there was still a long way to go.

“We tweaked the set-up of the car slightly for the second stage and I was really pleased with the time. As we are running seventh on the road, there are rocks starting to get dragged out to the surface by the preceding cars, so we have to be careful of those. But I'm really enjoying it!”

The crews now head for Blair Castle and the first of two services before two more stages, including the famous Drummond Hill.

Meeke has rejected an offer for a WRC drive stating that he would like to remain in the IRC.

It makes more sense anyway...he can continue in the S2000-based championship and when the WRC becomes all S2000 in 2011, if he wants he can switch over and have more experience than anyone currently in the WRC giving him the upper hand.
