This is a quite unbelievable decision that will be financially ruinous to most of the competitors in the Dakar and amounts to basically caving in to terrorism. Indeed cancelling the rally represents the greatest possible victory of all for the terrorists.

Where has the spirit of adventure of the Dakar gone? It seems the senuir executives of the ASO are now more interested in protecting their own corporate backsides than they are in the ultimate challenge for man and machine.

I am sure that if the competitors had been asked 99% of them would have asked to continue.

Of course a lot of the competitors would have tried it anyway, carried away by the heat of the moment...

It is different though when a group of them would then get killed in an ambush in islamic-arabo mauritania a week from now. Then all of a sudden the world would cry "shame, the organisers knew all this; hang them".

Everyone knows how the media is. The Paris-Dakar could be of the scene forever.
It's not good for sports, but it's worse for Africa...
