A bumper entry of 86 cars! I was a co driver in the 1996 event when there were 150 entries, with I think about 30 reserves. What has happened to rallying? Shame on the WRC for homogenising events for TV purposes and failing to make the required impact. Back in the 80's and 90's BBC2 used to go to town on the RAC, with several broadcasts over the four days and that was when the UK's round of the World Championship used to visit England, Scotland and Wales. It didn't cost £90 to see then either! I wonder why more people used to wrap up and be thrilled to see the rally go through their local forest or stately home.

So I guess that all these drivers are doing it without co drivers then?

Well,im really looking forward to Rally GB, but I cant help feeling that its wrong for a kid who hasnt even passed his driving test (Tom Cave) to be entered provided hes does pass it on 25th November. This is supposed to be a Rally for expert experienced drivers, Its great to see him starting at that young age but not a WRC event so early, I think it makes a nonsence of our sport. People want to see incredible skill and raw speed,a WRC pass is after all £90 nowadays. I dont see this sort of thing being allowed in F1. Im sorry if I offend anyone but its not right. its a really tough event and such imense pressure on the driver regardless of age and experience. Oh well, I wish him luck anyhow

I was lucky enough to do the last Rally to be called the Network Q R.A.C Rally back in 1997, I did it in a factory spec Group A Nova 1600 with Network Q as my sponsor and finsished 5th in what is now the JWRC category. It was a very long Rally with some monster 40 mile stages in South Wales. I will be glad to see some older stages coming back this year like Sweet Lamb/Hafren and Myherin (which is my favorite) etc etc. In the early 90's the Rally was even bigger and even longer again. I think there needs to be a high level of excitement to justify £90 for a full pass though, lots of top drivers and exciting cars need to be attracted to these sorts of events. Oh well, im looking forward to it.
