Petter crashes out in final test

Subaru's Petter Solberg crashed out of the inaugural WRC event in Jordan in the final stage on Saturday.

Petter, who had already had to retire on day 1, when he hit a rock in SS6 and damaged the suspension, was attacking in SS16 and running second fastest when he slid off the road heavily under braking, 5.3 kilometres into the 13.13 kilometre stage.

"We had so much go wrong today," said Petter, who had clawed his way up from 28th overall to 16th.

"We knew we had a brake caliper leaking, and in the last stage I braked and the car just didn't slow down enough. It's so, so frustrating and just boring, you know.

"I want to be able to push and drive properly but we just haven't been able to this weekend."

It was a disappointing end to the event for the Norwegian, and while it hasn't been confirmed if he will re-start on day 3, it's a real shame, as 'Hollywood' had set some good times - including posting the joint quickest time in SS1, as well as eight other top six times - and that shows what might have been.

Chris Atkinson meanwhile ended the day in a solid fourth place in the sister Impreza WRC and unlike his team-mate he had no issues.

"The biggest focus for us today was to get to the finish, make no mistakes and just hold position," added the Aussie. "We had no major problems and got here ok.

"There is a big gap in front and behind of us, but we can't afford to lose too much time so we were still driving reasonably quickly, just not taking any risks by driving around rocks and things like that. I'm happy with fourth though."
