BP Ford Abu Dhabi's number two driver, Jari-Matti Latvala has said that he has no intention of getting sucked into a 'pointless' fight for the lead on Rally Poland, the eighth round in the 2009 World Rally Championship.

Latvala finished the first leg 8.9 seconds off his team-mate, Mikko Hirvonen and while the two both took three-stage wins apiece, the situation in the drivers' championship dictates that it is Mikko that needs the win.

Indeed with Mikko in contention for the drivers' title and only seven points behind the current leader, Sebastien Loeb, Latvala has already confirmed that he won't make things difficult for his fellow countryman.

Speaking following Friday's action, Jari-Matti added that his only concern is to ensure Citroen's Dani Sordo stays behind them in third – and that way Ford takes the maximum manufacturers' points too.

"My feeling with the car improved as the day went on," Latvala reflected. "The roads are so fast that it took the first two stages for my brain to get used to the pace.

"The grip changed constantly. When the surface was hard it was slippery and when it was softer and sandy then the grip was better.

"I dropped time to Mikko on the penultimate stage this afternoon. I thought I had driven perfectly but he was more than eight seconds faster. It was the most incredible time.

"We all want a one-two finish with the championship in mind, so we have to be sensible and not become drawn into a pointless fight with Mikko.

"But Dani Sordo will put the pressure on tomorrow so we need to try and keep a fast pace too."
