WSS: Triumph, Be1 begin testing

Be1 Racing got the preparations for their first season as the official Triumph entry in the World Supersport Championship underway with a test session at the Spanish Almeria circuit.

With the British manufacturer switching their factory allegiance to Be1 from Team SC for 2009, the Italian outfit got their hands on a 'hybrid' Daytona 675 which features elements from this year's bike and developments for the future.

With Garry McCoy in Australia for Christmas, only Gianluca Nannelli was available to test the bike, but the former Honda Althea rider was immediately impressed with the machine.

“It has been a useful testing in order to begin to get some feeling with the bike. We did a lot of laps by using several different setting, and that kind of job helped me to understand the reactions of the bike when I change something in the set-up.

“My first impression is excellent and this kind of engine suits my riding style very well. So the first step is more than good and we also recorded quick times.”

Returning to full strength in January, team co-ordinator Lucio Nicastro was pleased to get in some trouble-free running in good conditions.

“In this testing we have worked on a hybrid bike, mixing the 2008 settings and the 2009 new ones. We have started to test some new elements and we verified the efficiency of the gear upgrade. Nannelli was able to work at 100% for the whole two days thank to an excellent weather and a nice road temperature, between 54°F and 86°F.

“He showed to have already found a good feeling with the bike and he gave the team useful indication which will be important for our work before taking back to the track at Valencia on the beginning of the new year.”

I really hope Triumph make a bigger impact in WSS in 2009. Of course, they won the BSS championship with Glen Richards on the Daytona 675, but if they do well in WSS, it's only a matter of time before they enter WSB - they need a big bike to complement the 675 though yet, but a 1050cc triple Daytona is coming (we've already got a 1050cc Tiger and Sprint ST) - watch this space in 2009. If you follow Triumph bike development in 2007/2008, you just KNOW it's gonna be hot!

... and perhaps one day (a good few years from now yet) MotoGP, that would be awesome.

P.S. I've owned twins and fours, but once you have ridden a 3 cylinder bike, there ain't no going back!
