Byrne to fly flag in shootout

There was further disappointment for the British contingent following the second phase of Superpole at Donington Park, with four of the remaining five competitors being knocked out of contention.

A series of quick lap times beyond the chequered flag proved the undoing for Leon Haslam and Tom Sykes as they had to settle for ninth and tenth positions on the grid. Haslam's effort was particularly heart-breaking after missing out on the shootout by just 0.003secs.

Jonathan Rea and James Ellison also dropped out in 12th and 14th position, the pair separated by Gregorio Lavilla. BMW's Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus completed the remaining runners.

Michel Fabrizio claimed the quickest time with a stunning last gasp effort of 1min 29.664secs, the Italian being joined by Ben Spies, Jakub Smrz, Shinya Nakano, Shane Byrne – the sole remaining Briton – Max Biaggi, Noriyuki Haga and Carlos Checa in the shootout.
