Camier shows potential with fight back

Leon Camier confirmed his potential as a World Superbike Championship racer at Donington Park with a run to sixth position on a weekend that he described as otherwise 'stressful'.

The runaway British Superbike Championship leader was making a high-profile debut as a wild-card at Donington Park, the Airwaves Yamaha rider immediately impressing on day one with the second quickest time in free practice.

However, his weekend would take a dramatic turn for the worse during provisional qualifying when a crash at the Craner Curves destroyed his number one bike.

Qualifying in 17th position aboard his standard spare bike, Camier's team worked hard to give him a better bike for the races, which they duly managed.

Although bad starts on both occasions left Camier outside the top twenty, he made considerable progress through the races, particularly in the second when he scythed his way up to an eventual sixth position.

However, while Camier was certainly pleased with his eventual result, he lamented the amount of problems in getting to that point.

“It was a stressful weekend,” he told Crash.net Radio. “In the BSB, everything has been running smoothly, but this weekend we have had nothing but problems. The first session went well, the pace was fast and we were really confident we could go faster, but every session from then on went wrong!

“To get a sixth in the second race from the 22nd we were at the end of the first lap is pretty amazing. Airwaves Yamaha pulled it out of the bag this weekend because I wrote off our number one bike and we qualified with the standard spare bike, so to do the times we've been doing is good!”

In reply to John's earlier comment. In 2007 Leon missed the end of the season after breaking his leg at Cadwell. Up to then he was infront of Sykes in the championship. At the start of 2008 he was still getting over his injuries and also missed a round at Oulton due to concussion and still nearly finished ahead of Cal and Tom in the championship. This year he is walking away with the BSB title. Leon is class and deserves a top WSB ride next year.
