Two wins for Ben Spies and a devastating crash for Noriyuki Haga have thrown the 2009 World Superbike Championship title race wide open once again with the gap between the two the closest it has been since Qatar.
Just 14 points now separate Haga from Spies with ten races remaining following the American's ninth and tenth win of the season.
His cause was certainly aided by Haga's unfortunate accident during race two, his high-side landing him in hospital, although indications suggest that he isn't as badly injured as originally feared.
Elsewhere, a gear problem in race one for Michel Fabrizio could prove crucial to his hopes as he fell away in his attempts to make the title three-way race. He is now 51 points behind Haga.
The battle for fourth in the standings intensified again following a difficult weekend for Jonathan Rea and a superb one for Leon Haslam. The Stiggy Honda rider is back up to fifth now following his podium, ten points behind his Honda counterpart.
The biggest mover following the weekend, however, has to be Shane Byrne, who is on the cusp on moving into the top eight overall following a fourth consecutive top six finish at Donington Park. He is up to tenth now having been as low as 15th just three rounds ago.
In addition, the three wild-card entrants at Donington Park all scored points to bring the total number of scorers up to 37 – already four more than who managed to get on the board last season.
