Zaugg keen to shine on home soil

Adrian Zaugg admits that he will be more motivated than ever as A1 Team South Africa heads into its home round of the A1GP season this weekend in Gauteng.

The fifth round of the season will be the first time that the Kyalami has hosted a round of the Nation versus Nation series with previous events having taken place on a street circuit in Durban.

It means that the teams will all go into the weekend aiming to make the most of free practice to get the best set-up possible for the race weekend, although Zaugg may have a slight advantage having run demonstration laps at the venue in the previous A1GP car last year – putting him in a good position to compare the venue with other circuits on the calendar.

“Kyalami can be compared to Zandvoort or Eastern Creek,” he said. “It will present a real challenge to the drivers. There are ups and downs, quick turns, blind turns, it has a bit of everything. There are some slow and fast chicanes and it's quite bumpy in some places, but it's still a nice mix. Overtaking will be difficult, but there will be one or two places where it will definitely be possible.

“The key will be to have a car that works well over bumps and is good in direction changes. A responsive car will be important."

Having endured a tough weekend in Durban last season, Zaugg added that he was especially motivated to secure a strong result on home soil as he also aims to help South Africa improve on its ninth place in the points standings.

“I am always highly motivated to do well for my country, but especially in front of the home fans,” he said. “We didn't do so well in Durban last year and we haven't enjoyed the start to the season we would have liked, so the Kyalami round is a big opportunity to get some good results and boost our championship points.”
