It's been a pretty manic past month for David Brabham as he travelled the globe to fulfil his bulging race schedule, expertly juggling commitments between Patrón Highcroft Racing and the American Le Mans Series, and preparing to race with Peugeot Sport at the Spa 1000 kilometres and Le Mans 24 Hours.
Accompanied by wife Lisa and sons Sam and Finn, Brabs flew into Chicago for the second round of the ALMS the Tuesday prior to St Petersburg where he helped capture Acura's and Patrón Highcroft Racing's first LMP1 victory before snatching some family holiday time in Mexico. A quick trip back to Europe to test with Peugeot ahead of the Spa 1000 kilometres and Brabs was back in the States at Long Beach, ready for round three of the ALMS.
We caught up with Brabs in the UK just before he travelled to Belgium for his first LMP1 race with Peugeot – the Spa 1000 kilometres.
Q:
You've had a pretty busy start to the season with the Patrón Highcroft team racing the new Acura ARX-02a. After Sebring, you must have been pleased to have sealed the first P1 class win for Acura and the team at only the second round of the season at St Petersburg?
David Brabham:
Absolutely. After Sebring, where both Acuras had problems, there was a lot of work being done in time for St Petersburg, to try and resolve some of the reliability issues. We went into St Petersburg with a very different feel to what we had last year, because last year we obviously had a lot more cars and a lot more competition. This year is very different, so going there we were affectively racing de Ferran Motorsport. Team Fernandez are right up there, on the Street circuits they aren't that far away, and the Mazdas are getting more competitive as they understand that car more, but even when you are racing one other team in an equal car, it's really tough.
We qualified second. Scott did the qualifying. He wasn't particularly happy with the way he put his lap together but that was fine, we knew we could still win. We chose a tyre strategy that worked for us and Scott was able to put pressure on Gil [de Ferran] at the end of that stint and make him panic a little bit in terms of decision making and it played into our hands. Unfortunately they had a problem that put them out of the race so all we had to do is get in front of the Fernandez car, which had got in front of us during the pit stop. So we got past Adrian [Fernandez] and it was just a case of getting to the finish.
I remember crossing the line and not having much emotion at all. It was like, where is everyone? Last year I was always charging from behind, which was great, but this year it's a very different feeling.
It was great for the team to get Acura's first P1 win, it's a historic event. In years to come they will look back and remember that it was the Patrón Highcroft Racing who delivered that win, and it's an important victory for the team.
After Sebring, we moved onto Long Beach where we got pole position and we were looking strong for the race. We were in the lead and then we had a penalty. There's not much we can do about it now but it definitely cost us the race. We would have got out in front - just by pit stops we would have been seven seconds up the road, because we had quick pit stops. I think Gil had a problem starting his car so that would have given us a little buffer and the car was fast enough to maintain a gap or pull away. So, whoever was going to get in front there was going to take the win as it was going to be tough for the other one to get past.
