D-Brief: Looking Back At Lime Rock

After the challenges of round four of the American Le Mans Series at Salt Lake City, the entire Patrón Highcroft team took a very good look at ourselves and how we did things and how we needed to improve. Ranging from pit stops, to the way the fuel goes in, the tyres are changed, the drivers change over, the belts work and our in and out laps. We looked at absolutely everything during a very good meeting at Highcroft Racing's head quarters in Danbury, Connecticut, before round five at Lime Rock and we felt ready to repeat the race winning success we enjoyed there the previous year.

Heading up to the event, we had a special opportunity to host an open day at Highcroft's Danbury base. With the race team helping Malaria No More through the unique Miles to End Malaria campaign, it offered the perfect opportunity to invite members of the media alongside Scott Case, CEO of Malaria No More, to help spread the charity's important global message.

Malaria kills a child in Africa every 30 seconds but the ridiculous thing is that these deaths are preventable. A simple $10/£5 mosquito net can protect two children or a mother and baby, reducing the spread of the disease, saving lives and keeping families intact. Highcroft Racing, together with the team's sponsor Tequila Patrón, is donating $10 for every mile the team completes in the 2009 race season - approximately 4,500 miles – to Malaria No More.

There was a picture pride of place at the open day of some African children with mosquito nets provided by the Miles to End Malaria initiative, holding the team's banner. It really struck a chord, not only with me but with everyone present, I hope. It was a great event and it helped to kick off the week of the Lime Rock race.

When we got to the event itself, we were looking in good shape towards the end of the race having done and executed all the things we had to improve on. We got into the lead and were pretty much controlling the race from the front until a puncture forced me to pit. With just 10 or so minutes to go there wasn't enough time to catch the de Ferran Acura and we had to settle for second place.

We were obviously disappointed not to have pulled that one off especially as it was the team's home race and after such a fantastic result there last year, when we took our first outright victory.

Our focus at Lime Rock was winning and we have to continue to keep looking at things and how we do them in many areas. We are getting better and stronger and Mid Ohio and Elkhart Lake, the next two rounds, are probably must win events for us. We have to keep the momentum going and get back to our winning ways and we're all looking forward to stepping up to the plate as we head into the last half of the season.

Before I head back to the States, I've just about got time for one more bit of moonlighting. Last year I was invited to compete in the Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix and they have very kindly asked me to go back this year, so I am very much looking forward to going there and competing again this weekend.

The event is really well supported by the fans and there are some great old cars and lots of drivers I know. The Danes love their racing and are very easy going; in fact they remind me of Australians in terms of their attitude, so I feel at home there. Last year was really enjoyable and I am sure this year will be as well.
