Alesi ponders “Race of a Thousand Years” prospect

Jean Alesi is being touted by Schnitzer as a possible driver in the inaugural Race of a Thousand Years, to be held at the ex-Grand Prix track in Adelaide on December 31st.

Schnitzer, who run the factory BMW V12 LMR sports-prototype in the American Le Mans Series, have yet to commit to this novel race, but will attend the event, which is scheduled to finish at midnight on December 31st, if they are still in contention for the ALMS title. The team have already scored two victories in the ALMS this year, at Charlotte and Silverstone, and currently leads both the team's and driver's title chase.

Alesi is a known friend of BMW Motorsport boss Gerhard Berger and the two have discussed the project between them. If Alesi were to appear it could be a signal to the direction that the Frenchman wants his career to take when his Formula One day's are over.

A BMW spokesperson recently stated, “Jean would like to do it and should be available for it.”

If Alesi were to appear in a sportscar while he is still under contract with Prost, it would mark a very rare occasion. Formula One driver's are actively dissuaded from competing in other forms of machinery other than their F1 mount and usually have it written in to their contract not to compete in any other organised championship.
