New entry signals competition for Corvette.

Corvette Racing will finally get some competition in the American Le Mans Series GT1 class after Doran Racing's Fredy Lienhard, Didier Theys and Kevin Doran announced they are teaming up to enter a Maserati MC12 for the Road America round of the series.

Corvette Racing have gone unchallenged this year since the withdrawal of Aston Martin but is now set to do battle with the one car that has arguably proved its biggest rival in the past.

It won't be the first time Maserati has been represented in the championship after the team entered an MC12 in 2005, although it was heavily restricted and unable to score championship points.

However, this effort is one that has come together quickly and having spent only a minimal amount of time in the car, Theys admits Road America will be a steep learning curve for them.

"I have no idea how competitive we will be against the factory Corvettes," he said. "They have so much experience and they are a factory effort, and we are a small, private team. I have very little experience in a modern GT car, but I was really enthused about the Maserati after driving it at the test. In the little bit of time I spent in the car I really enjoyed it, and it will be a new experience for me.

"The only other time I drove a modern GT car was in one race last year in Brazil, when I drove a Saleen. But I enjoyed driving the Maserati at the test, and I'm really happy that Kevin Doran is involved; it will be like in the old days.”

The same line-up as Doran Racing's effort in the Grand-Am Rolex Series, the Maserati will still be a private entry as it was bought by Leinhard, who also competes with Theys at Horag Racing in the Le Mans Series, for his own personal collection earlier this year. As of yet, only Road America has been pencilled in, but Petit Le Mans has also been targeted for an appearance.

I think the reference is to the Prodrive team that fielded the #007 and #009 DBR9's the last couple of years. It was during the off season that they decided not to recommit to the ALMS and instead went to the FIA/GT in Europe. At Sebring this year, there was an Aston Martin DBR9 from Team Medona that entered in the GT1 class and came in third.

I noticed the word "withdrawal" was used when referring to the factory Astons. Does that mean that they were entered in the 2007 series and withdrew? If so, I'm even more disappointed with the team. I thought that ALMS having Aston Martin Racing on their 2007 entries page was just a presumptuous move on their part, however, this isn't the first time I've heard of Aston "withdrawing" giving me the impression they deserted the series. Were they entered?
