Jaime Melo and Mika Salo have helped to earn Risi Competizione the coveted first team At-Large honours on the 2007 All-American Racing Team, as voted for by the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters (AARWBA).
The Brazilian-Finnish pairing narrowly captured the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) GT2 crown for the squad this year, triumphing in eight out of the twelve encounters to see off the challenge of Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 RSR duo Jorg Bergmeister and Johannes van Overbeek by just four points. The result marked Houston-based Risi's second successive ALMS class laurels
Salo and Melo began the season in seemingly invincible fashion, winning the opening four races including a scintillating last turn bump and lead swap in the Sebring Twelve Hours against their year-long Flying Lizard nemesis' – a scant two tenths of a second marking the closest finish in the history of the legendary endurance classic.
A mid-season dry spell propelled the Lizards back into the title chase, but Melo and Salo hit back to close the championship out with four more wins from the final five races.
“Mika and Jaime had an extraordinary year,” remarked Risi Competizione owner Giuseppe Risi. “They fought back from adversity and delivered a typical Ferrari-like performance in the last part of the season. I applaud them and the entire Risi racing team and operation. This is a wonderful honour for an exceptional season.”
Second team honours went the way of ALMS LMP1 champions Allan McNish and Dindo Capello of Audi Sport North America, Penske Racing LMP2 title-winners Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas and Corvette Racing teamsters Olivier Beretta and Oliver Gavin for their domination of GT1.
