Penske Porsche has announced plans to run a third car in the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.
Defending race winners Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas will go into the weekend looking to maintain their slender LMP2 points lead over Patron Highcroft pairing David Brabham and Scott Sharp, while Sascha Maassen and Patrick Long will again team up in the sister car.
However, in a change from the norm, Penske IndyCar Series drivers Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves will also take part in a third yellow RS Spyder, with team members from the IndyCar programme coming across to service the car.
As a result of the move, five RS Spyders will take part in the race, with Dyson Racing running its regular two-car team.
“By running a third RS Spyder, Penske Racing adds extra suspense to the series just in the closing stages of the season,” Porsche head of motorsport Hartmut Kristen said. “Five RS Spyder in one race – that's another highlight for the American Le Mans Series, which has reached a level of performance that matches any international comparison.
“Here, the fans see some of the best motor sport in the world. We are hoping an additional RS Spyder entry will help put points on the board for Porsche in our quest for the championship.”
Porsche trails Acura by four points in the LMP2 manufacturers' title chase with only the Petit Le Mans and the season finale at Laguna Seca left to run.
