de Ferran continues winning streak

Gil de Ferran and Simon Pagenaud were able to celebrate a third successive victory in the American Le Mans Series as the 2009 campaign resumed at Lime Rock Park.

Victory for the #66 Acura came on the back of victories at both Long Beach and Miller as de Ferran and Pagenaud closed the gap on points leaders David Brabham and Scott Sharp.

The two Acura's had run close together throughout the race before the Highcroft car of Brabham and Sharp jumped into the lead after taking on just two tyres during one of its pitstops.

However, when Brabham then suffered a puncture, Pagenaud was able to retake the lead and held the place through to the flag to maintain the winning run

"Today the show was on and I think the fans had a good time," Pagenaud said. "The car was really good at the beginning though we developed a little bit of understeer at the end. I made the decision to change all four tyres as I was worried about punctures, which is what happened later to Highcroft. There was lots of debris out there and I wanted to be safe by changing all the tyres - I'm glad that it paid off. I'm very happy for the whole de Ferran team that we were able to extend our winning streak to three."

Team owner de Ferran was also pleased with the victory.

"It was a great race - I hope the fans share my excitement!” he said. “We built a good lead at the start, but as the race continued and traffic becomes a factor, the gap would vary massively. I had a moment where I got sideswiped by one of the other prototypes and I lost a little bit of time. Also, while navigating turn five, I mistakenly hit the Pit Lane Speed Limiter button, which caused the car behind me to run into me, causing some minor damage and a bit more time lost.

"Once Simon got in the car everything was going well and he kept the lead, but Highcroft pitted after us and could react to what we did on the last stop by only taking two tyres, which put them a bit ahead of us on the track.

"Unfortunately for them - and fortunately for us - they got a puncture in one tyre and we were able to take back the lead. Regardless, it was going to be an interesting race all the way to the finish - I think in general we had a little edge on pace, so it's a shame that we couldn't race them till the end. The car was really fast and we're very happy to get the win, this is our third win in a row. It is important that we keep focused and don't let off."

Ok... a puncture can happen to anyone, but other than that, De Ferran's relationship with Honda/Acura (after all, he was their motor sport manager for a while) definitely seems to have "given" that team a consistent edge in pace since the cars were delivered... I am not talking conspiracies or any rubbish like that but it is hard to fathom that with a supposedly identical car, run by a very experienced team with the selection of experienced drivers, in Highcroft's case a multiple Le Mans winner - and don't try and tell Me that Brabs wouldn't know as well as De Ferran etc how to get the best out of a LMP car - that they end up consistently just a LITTLE bit slower than the other Acura
