David Brabham admits he is delighted with the announcement that he is to continue with the Patron Highcroft Racing team into the 2010 American Le Mans Series season.
Brabham has been with Highcroft since 2007 and finished second in the LMP2 standings in 2008 before a move into LMP1 this year – where he secured the championship crown alongside Scott Sharp.
While Sharp will leave the team to run with his own Extreme Speed Motorsports outfit in 2010, Brabham will remain with Highcroft for a fourth season as the team seeks to defend its championship title.
With the ALMS bringing in one prototype class for 2010, Highcroft will run an updated version of the LMP2 Acura ARX-01.
The team's relationship with Acura will see it act as the official test team for Honda Performance Development – the racing arm of Honda in the USA.
“After a fantastic 2009 season and taking the ALMS title, I'm delighted to return to the 2010 Series with the championship-winning package of Patron Highcroft Racing and Honda Performance Development,” Brabham said. “Obviously, after the end of a great year, there was a bit of uncertainty about the type of car we would be using in 2010 but things have worked out exactly the way they should have done. It's absolutely right for us to continue our work with Honda Performance Development.
“We've been with HPD for over three years now, we enjoy a great relationship and we know how serious they are about this programme. We're very much looking forward to getting on with developing the car and racing in the 2010 American Le Mans Series in partnership.
“It's great to be heading into my fourth season with Patron Highcroft Racing. It's the first time I've been with a team for more than a year since my Panoz days. It makes such a difference in terms of continuity because you develop with the team and we've definitely done that.
“Patron Highcroft has repeatedly shown what a class act they are in getting all the results and helping Acura to achieve exactly what they wanted to achieve over the past three years. It really shows the dedication and quality of the team.”
Brabham added that he fully agreed with the decision taken by ALMS bosses to bring the two prototype classes together and predicted another exciting season in 2010.
“We need to wait and see what the ALMS do in terms of regulations but the intent is to close the gap between the P1 and P2 cars,” he said. “I think that with the current state of the economy and the entries it's the best thing to do. We should be in store for another close year of racing.”
