Tough going for IRWIN Racing on Gold Coast

David Brabham and the IRWIN Racing team struggled to 23rd position on the opening day of the ArmorAll Gold Coast 600.

It was a frustrating day at the ArmorAll Gold Coast 600 as IRWIN Racing finishing the day in overall 23rd position – based on fastest recorded lap times across all practice sessions.

The team used the four 40-minute practice sessions to fine-tune the IRWIN Ford, looking for a competitive base set-up and improved front and rear grip.

“We haven't really done what we expected to do today time-wise, we were hoping the IRWIN Ford would be quicker," engineer David Stuart admitted, "The positive out of the day is that we have reasonably good front grip, the negative is that we have reasonably poor rear grip on the mid-to-exit throttle application. This is what we've been working on most of the day.

"We need to have a good look at the data to see what we can do as far as improving the car for qualifying tomorrow. I don't think we are far away, but we are far enough given where we are. We need to improve for qualifying tomorrow and I'm confident that we can do that.”

Poor weather conditions during Wednesday's compulsory Gold Coast 600 test day meant that the gains made in the wet were irrelevant on the new, shortened Surfers Paradise street circuit.

“The first session was really about learning the circuit, getting a feel for it," Brabham reported, "We've got quite a different set up here compared to what we've been running over the last two races, so we are trying to get a bit of guidance on that. On the second run, I cooked a couple of tyres, which lost me a bit of confidence under brakes. I just need to look at the data to see where I can improve and where we can improve the IRWIN Ford.”

The event resumes tomorrow with qualifying at 9.35am, followed by the Top 10 Shootout and the first of the weekend's two 300-kilometre races.
